Certification for leads and supervisors
HSPA's Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) is its management credential. According to HSPA's 2026 handbook:
- You must hold full CRCST certification before taking the CHL exam, and keep it current to keep the CHL.
- The exam covers four domains: planning and decision making, organizing, leading, and controlling. It has 150 multiple-choice questions (125 scored).
- CHL holders recertify every year through continuing education.
New Jersey's hospital rules also require the director or supervisor of central service to have two years of supervisory experience and national sterile processing certification.
